Covilhã invites you to… HAVE FUN!
Covilhã is a hidden city located on the side of the highest continental point of Portugal; our beautiful Serra da Estrela. Through the streets and alleys, we meet different people from all over Portugal and the world. Covilhã is a unique place that, from the youngest to the oldest, conquers a little piece of out hearts and sticks in the memory of those who pass through.
The city is the heir of a very rich and interesting historical heritage related to the wool industry which was established here several hundred years ago.
It has always been known as the city of the wool industry, nowadays as a university city and, also for this reason, a young and dynamic city with a lot to explore.
In Covilhã and the surrounding area, discover the Land of Castles, Historic Villages, the Wool Route, the Ancient Jewish Route and the Serra da Estrela Natural Park by taking one of the routes that introduce you to the natural and cultural heritage of this region.
SERRA DA ESTRELA TOWER FULL OF SNOW
The only mountain range where there is a season of winter famous for winter sports like ski and snowboard. Also famous is the creamy Serra da Estrela cheese made from the sheep milk raised on the slopes of the mountain range.
Beside enjoying good food, enjoying the landscape is one of the most popular activities for those who visit the city, as the viewpoints are breathtaking.
MIRADOURO DAS PORTAS DO SOL
From this viewpoint, we can see the landscape that the old castle, located here, used to have. You can also admire the urban art that fills the corners of the city (Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wool_covilhaurbanart/). There is also a sundial near this viewpoint.
MIRADOURO VARANDA DOS CARQUEIJAIS
This viewpoint, located on the road between Covilhã and Serra da Estrela Tower, has a breathtaking view of the entire city. It’s a must-see.
MIRADOURO DOS PIORNOS
Another pitstop on the way to Serra da Estrela, at an altitude of approximately 1 630 meters, built on the slopes of granite, offers a unique landscape shaped by ancient glaciers.
WOOL COVILHÃ URBAN ART
Alongside the “natural art” that Covilhã offers us, the talent of its residents has adorned several corners of the city. The best way to visit and appreciate this art is to walk through the streets and alleys and feel the “magic” of art coming in!
This project, which began in 2011, is definitely worth appreciating. Explore the Urban Art Route.
